The George M. Sheldrick Prize for Contributions to Structural Science The George M. Sheldrick Prize for Contributions to Structural Science recognizes outstanding scientific achievement in the structural sciences, with particular emphasis on innovative methods, algorithms, or software. The Prize honors non-tenured researchers whose work advances the field of molecular structure analysis through the development of new tools or the refinement of existing ones to address complex structural problems.
The Prize is established in memory of Professor George M. Sheldrick (1942–2025), one of the most highly cited scientists in the field of molecular structure determination, in recognition of his enduring contributions to the discipline.
The prize comprises a certificate, a monetary prize of US$ 3,000, and coverage of registration fees* for the IUCr Congress. The Laureate is expected to attend the Congress and deliver a plenary oral presentation. There are no geographic restrictions on eligibility.
The triannual prize is bestowed during the IUCr Congress years starting in 2026. Please note that during the non-IUCr years a similar George Sheldrick Prize is awarded by the European Crystallographic Association.
The Education and Workforce Development Committee shall be responsible for soliciting nominations, reviewing candidates, and selecting the laureate.
Nominations: Deadline is January 1st. The nominations should be sent via applications to the Education and Workforce committee. Questions about the award can be addressed to the committee, or AUC chair.
*) The registration reimbursement is kept separate from the prize purse: it is not available to a laureate who opts not to attend, but it meaningfully reduces the financial barrier to participation and should increase the likelihood that laureates attend and present.
